Mim Gorman

img_1690

The committee and all the members of Slaney Valley Community Games & Ardattin Athletics wish to extend their deepest sympathy to the Gorman family on the death of their father Mim.  May peace and comfort find you during this sad time.

Mim’s contribution to athletics and community games in our locality and throughout the county for in excess of 40 years cannot be measured.  His commitment to the young of our area far exceeded that expected of any one individual.  Because of his sense of Community and his forward thinking leaves us with his legacy of the finest running track in Carlow.

Always most evident in Mim’s attitude was his sense of fairness to all children, no child would ever be treated differently or receive an unfair advantage under his watch.  He took great joy in seeing young children develop into young adults and valued most a good attitude above all other attributes.

In recent years his health hasn’t allowed him take on an as active role as he would have liked, nevertheless his love for athletics continued to show as all activities were carried out under his watchful eye from the vantage point of the front seat of his car.  There was only one person in the field that the kids wanted to impress and they flocked around his car at the end of the training session to hear him say “you can take another two seconds or more off that time”.

As our 2017 track and field season is due to commence his presence in Ardattin will be sadly missed by all as we know we can never again say “we will ask Mim, he’ll know”.  The greatest honour we and all involved can bestow on Mim is to keep athletics & Community Games strong in our area.

Rest in peace Mim.

County Final Results

The County Finals in Ardattin on Saturday & Sunday 18th & 19th of June proved to be a fantastic success for our area. The morning started off on a very high note with the club being awarded 1st place in the parade. Well done to the Parade Organisers Laura Murphy & Orna Brophy. These two young girls have helped our club in so many ways during the year. Thank you to the parents who contributed towards the parade and a special word of thanks to the pupils and teachers of Kildavin NS for making the torches. All our under 6’s & 8’s were in action on Saturday morning and a number of them proceeded to semi-finals on Sunday morning and then to finals on Sunday afternoon. To see so many young children from our area taking part and performing to the best of their ability was very rewarding for the coaches. On Saturday afternoon our U10’s & 12’s were in action and again everyone performed to the best of their ability. Their hard work during training for the past number of months was very evident with large number advancing to semi-finals and finals. Also on Saturday our members took part in cycling on grass, long jump and turbo javelin. The club achieved great success in all these areas. Sunday was a damp day to say the least but again the young athletes performed in their semi-finals with a large number reaching the finals which took place on Sunday afternoon. The competition for the mixed distance relays were held on Tuesday the 21st in Ardattin. A large number of our members made the panel for these relays and will be representing the county in Athlone in August.

The young people who joined our club this year as helpers provided huge backup to the coaches. We want to thank Orna Brophy, Laura Murphy, Barry Hickey, Riona Byrne & Stephen Carroll. Barry and Riona were unable to attend the County Finals but their commitment to club during the year is much appreciated. Orna, Laura & Stephen worked so hard over the weekend. Your help and willingness to do all your were asked was of huge benefit and helped enormously to the smooth running of finals.

Two of our young competitors were injured over the course of the weekend and we are very happy to say that both have made a full recovery.

The following received medals.

Athletics County Finals 18th & 19th.

The Community Games county finals will take place Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th in Ardattin field. There will be NO training on Friday 17th, training will take place on Thursday 16th at 6.30 – 7.15 for U6’s & U8’s, 7.15 – 8.15 for U’10’s up. We will be focussing on relays so please try to have all children attend so that they can practice with their team.

Saturday 18th: All children are requested to participate in the Community Games Parade. It is an important part of the day and very enjoyable for the children.

  • All Slaney Valley participants are requested to meet at our tent (Green) no later than 9.15am on Saturday morning. Assembly 9.30 for parade.
  • Athletic Gear will be provided (for all athletes taking part in individual events). This gear will be given out at training on Thursday evening.  We will provide gear for as many others as we can for the parade also. All children can wear their own black shorts and white socks. We ask that all gear be returned on Saturday before leaving the field. It will be washed and given out on Sunday to those participating in the semi-finals/finals on Sunday. Each year a number of jerseys “go missing” so we ask that everyone co-operate with our request not to bring jerseys home on Saturday evening. Children should therefore bring their own t-shirt to change into.
  • When the parade is finished all children must return immediately to the tent as races will start directly after the parade. No parents allowed on the running track only managers.
  • Parents are asked to listen out for races, field events and relays and keep the children close to the tent so they do not miss their event.
  • The normal procedure is U6’s first then U8, 10, 12 ETC. U6 and U8 will be finished by lunch time (approx 1pm) on Saturday but may have to come back Sunday. This year all U14 upwards events will take place on Sunday. Field events will be called out so please listen.
  • There will be a break for lunch (approx 1-2pm) and the races will resume after, however some field events may take place during lunch – times to be confirmed.
  • Please leave a contact number if your child gets through to Sunday in case of any changes in times etc.
  • If your child is not going to participate/ for queries please contact Deirdre 087 1171881 or Martina 087 9960357 as soon as possible.
  • Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday 18th.
